School Council

School Council
Each class at St. James elects two representatives to sit on our school council. This is a good way for children and teachers to talk together and help to decide things that we may not have thought of otherwise.

The school council work together very well and have begun to see the results of their work. Here are some of the things they have been up to!

BIRD FEEDERS
As part of their role, the Council are always trying to think of ways to improve the school environment. Most of our children are animal mad, and therefore one suggestion was that we should be doing more to help our wildlife. The idea of birdfeeders was raised and a few weeks later we have 12 new birdfeeders within the school grounds! The school council would like to thank Mrs Smith for her generous donation!

COMPOST BINS
We have three compost bins. They have been situated on the far side of the quiet area. The school council's aim for these bins is to build up a good compost supply for the school grounds and maybe for the wider community. At St James we are aware that we often throw away a lot of material that can be composted, for example from lunchtimes. The school working towards having a system whereby we can compost all of our fruit and vegetable waste. We have also set up a meeting and discussion with a local expert to help us to understand exactly what we can do with our new composters.

FRUIT TUCK SHOP
The school council have drawn up a survey for the whole school to answer about fruit! This is because they are setting up a link with the Fruit Basket shop in St James. Their aim is to provide a tuck shop facitily for the children possibly at playtime or lunchtime. This is a non-profit venture that is aimed at providing fruit for children during the day at school (especially for those not in KS1 as they already receive fruit). They hope that is might make things easier for children to get a good healthy diet! Also, we feel that it will be a good experince for the children in terms of using money and it will hopefully help their numeracy studies.
